    ‘All the places we were not supposed to go’:a case study of formative class and gender habitus in adventure climbing

    This paper explores the origins of meaning in adventurous activities. Specifically, the paper reports on a study of 10 adventure climbers in the Scottish mountaineering community. The study explores how formative experiences have influenced engagement in adventure climbing. Work has been done on the phenomenology of adventure and how individuals interpret and find meaning in the activity—this paper goes a step further and asks where do these dispositions come from? Using Bourdieu’s ideas of field, habitus and forms of capital to frame these experiences in the wider social environment, early experiences are identified that, for the subjects of this study, provide a framework for their later adoption of the ‘adventure habitus’. Among these influences are mainstream education, adventure education in particular, as well as broader formative experiences relating to factors such as gender and class. In addition, the study suggests that accounts differ between males and females in terms of their attitudes and dispositions towards adventure. This may relate to their respective experiences as well as expanding opportunities for both males and females. However, while the ‘adventure field’ provides a context where women can develop transformative identities, these are nearly always subject to male validation

    ‘You don't understand us!’ An inside perspective on adventure climbing

    This paper presents a specific (insider) perspective of a small group of experienced male Scottish adventure climbers and explores through in-depth semi-structured interviews their attitudes, strategies and justifications associated with potentially high-risk climbing situations. Attention is paid to how participants feel that they are represented and viewed by others (outsiders) who do not participate in mountaineering and climbing activities. Climbers identify the significance of media, commercial and social representations of them as risk takers. The analysis explores risk as being socially constructed, with the associated assumptions being embedded in particular discourses. Climbers present themselves as rational managers of risk and provide examples of their risk-management strategies, with such characterizations being central to their identity as climbers

    British surfers and their attitudes and values toward the environment

    The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of British surfers toward their environment. Eight surfers were interviewed and their views analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis to explore their perceptions of the factors that have influenced their engagement in proenvironmental behaviors. The findings suggest that surfers (in this sample), while motivated to engage in proenvironmental behaviors, are also influenced by a range of factors and appear to be primarily motivated by their identification and a need to maintain their experience of that sport. This reveals an inherent dilemma. Through their sport surfers are able to observe the effects of environmental degradation on the environment (e.g., polluted water), the ecosystem, and on their personal health. However, they are also aware of the trade-offs required in pursuing their sport that may damage the environment (e.g., toxic material involved in sport kit manufacture). When questioned, surfers stated they would be unwilling to give up their sport even at the cost of the environment in which those activities are experienced. This highlights a possibly common problem among environmentally minded outdoor enthusiasts: when do personal benefits outweigh the responsibilities of environmental stewardship? The value of these findings is discussed in relation to the promotion of proenvironmental behaviors and engagement with proenvironmental groups

    Social capital, social media and the changing patterns of participation in climbing

    This paper draws upon Bourdieu’s instrumental perspective on social capital in explaining the process of reproduction and change in the contemporary climbing context. This study investigated how different forms of social capital including social media networks have influenced the contemporary climbing culture. This field is a site of contestation between the residual, established and emerging cultures. Increased participation across age and gender seems to reflect the broadening of the middle class social position and this is particularly evident for women and young people. Social media networks reinforced the position and reproductive potential of the middle class in this context. This forms part of a broader five year study into climbing and mountaineering and draws upon a mixed grounded methodology where the researcher has taken the position of participant observer. Copyright @ 2009 Elsevier B.V.The e2v technologies CCD54, or swept-charge device (SCD) has been extensively radiation tested for use in the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) instrument, to be launched as a part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chandrayaan-1 payload in 2008. The principle use of the SCD is in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) applications, the device providing a relatively large collecting area of 1.1 cm2, and achieving near Fano-limited spectroscopy at −15 °C, a temperature that is easily obtained using a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). This paper describes the structure and operation of the SCD and details the methodology and results obtained from two proton irradiation studies carried out in 2006 and 2008, respectively to quantify the effects of proton irradiation on the operational characteristics of the device. The analysis concentrates on the degradation of the measured FWHM of various elemental lines and quantifies the effects of proton fluence on the observed X-ray fluorescence spectra from mineralogical target samples

    Look at Me Now: What Attracts U.S. Shareholders?

    This paper investigates the underlying determinants of home bias using a comprehensive data set on U.S. investors' aggregate holdings of every foreign stock. Among those foreign stocks that are not listed on U.S. exchanges, which account for more than 96 percent of our usable data sample, we find that U.S. investors prefer firms with characteristics associated with greater information transparency, such as stronger home-country accounting standards. We document that a U.S. cross-listing is economically important, as U.S. ownership of a foreign firm roughly doubles upon cross-listing in the United States. We explore the cross-sectional variation in this "cross-listing effect" and find that the increase in U.S. investment is greatest for firms that are from weak accounting backgrounds and are otherwise informationally opaque, suggesting that the key effect of cross-listing is improvements in disclosure that are valued by U.S. investors. By contrast, cross-listing does not increase the appeal of stocks from countries with weak shareholder rights, suggesting that U.S. cross-listing cannot substitute for legal protections in the home country. Nor does the cross-listing effect appear to be driven simply by increased "familiarity"� with the stock or lowered cross-border transactions costs.

    Imaging and spectroscopy using a scintillator-coupled EMCCD

    The CCD97 is a low light level (L3) device from e2v technologies range of electron multiplying CCDs (EMCCDs). The device uses e2v's patented extended gain register and through the use of appropriately designed electrodes can be used to maximise the signal whilst keeping the impact of the noise to a minimum. The nature of this device makes it ideal for use with a scintillator in order to see individual flashes of light from single X-ray photons. Through the examination of individual X-ray events, it is possible to analyse each interaction in the scintillator to determine the sub-pixel position of the interaction. Using the modelling capabilities of the Geant4 toolkit it is possible to simulate X-ray events and thus examine interactions with known energy and point of interaction. Through bringing together the experimental and simulated results, the spectral capabilities of such a device are discussed

    U.S. International Equity Investment

    U.S. investors are the largest group of international equity investors in the world, but to date conclusive evidence on which types of foreign firms are able to attract U.S. investment is not available. Using a comprehensive dataset of all U.S. investment in foreign equities, we find that the single most important determinant of the amount of U.S. investment a foreign firm receives is whether the firm cross-lists on a U.S. exchange. Correcting for selection biases, cross-listing leads to a doubling (or more) in U.S. investment, an impact greater than all other factors combined. We also show that our firm-level analysis has implications for country-level studies, suggesting that research investigating equity investment patterns at the country-level should include cross-listing as an endogenous control variable. We describe easy-to-implement methods for including the importance of cross-listing at the country level.

    The use of automatic scale selection to improve the spatial and spectral resolution of a scintillator-coupled EMCCD

    The technology behind the Electron-Multiplying Charge Coupled Device (EMCCD) was successfully exploited by e2v technologies in the late 1990s. Since then, many uses have been found for these low light level (L3) devices including surveillance and many scientific applications. The EMCCD increases or 'multiplies' the charge signal by the phenomenon of impact ionisation (or avalanche multiplication) allowing the detection of low signal events of only a few photons. When coupled with a scintillator, this low light capability can be used to image photon flashes from individual X-ray interaction events. The combination of depth of interaction effects in the scintillator, shot noise on the signal and the multiplication noise factor lead to large variations in the profile of the detected signal from a constant energy X-ray source. This variation leads to reduced spectral performance and can have adverse effects on the centering techniques used in photon-counting imagers. The concept of scale-space is similar in many ways to the Fourier or wavelet transforms. Automatic scale selection can be implemented through the scale-space transform as a method of fitting a known profile to the observed photon flash. The process is examined here in the context of the photon-counting EMCCD detector and the results obtained in both simulated and experimental data compared. Through the analysis of the fitting process and the results achieved, the implications on imaging performance and spectral resolution are discussed
